Cardio C-Reactive Protein, highly sensitive (CRP,hs) A
high or increasing amount of CRP in your blood suggests
that you have an acute infection or inflammation. Because
CRP increases in cases of inflammation, the test is ordered
when acute inflammation is a risk (such as from an infection
after surgery) or suspected based on patient symptoms.
It is also ordered to help diagnose conditions, such as
rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The blood tests may be
repeated often to learn whether treatment of an inflammatory
disease is effective (CRP levels drop as inflammation
subsides). C-Reactive protein is a substance in the blood
that indicates the presence of inflammation and could
warn of a heart attack in advance. Elevated amounts of
the protein in men may triple their risk for heart attack
and double their risk for stroke, whereas elevated amounts
in women can increase their heart attack risk up to seven
times. Cardio (also specific or high sensitivity) C-Reactive
Protein is a marker of inflammation to the blood vessels
and a strong predictor of risk for future myocardial infarctions; and
Homocysteine
The amino acid, Homocysteine, plays a role in
destroying the lining of your artery walls, promoting
the formation of blood clots, and also accelerates the
buildup of scar tissue. High levels may increase the chance
of heart disease and stroke, especially if you have other
risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity,
smoking, or family history.
Also, we have the CWP plus CRP,hs and Homocysteine
for $174.
This test, called the Cardio Check-Up, Basic, replaces
the CardioPlus profile with the CWP for a more in-depth

DLS Price $72

Lp(a) is ordered, along
with other lipid tests, to selectively screen for risk
factors for coronary artery disease and cerebral vascular
disease. Some doctors have started to order Lp(a) and several
other emerging cardiac risk markers (such as Apo
B, hs-CRP, Apo
A, and Homocysteine levels) and cardiovascular tests
on patients who have a strong family
history of premature
coronary artery disease.
Some doctors may also order these tests on those who already
have heart or vascular disease, but who have normal or only
mildly elevated lipids. Since about 50% of the people who
have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels, doctors
are starting to look at other factors that may have an influence
on heart disease. It is thought that elevated Lp(a) levels
can exacerbate other heart and vascular disease processes.

Lp-PLA2 (the
PLAC Test) is a vascular-specific inflammatory marker independent
of traditional risk factors and other inflammatory markers. (click

CRP,hs, Lp-PLA2 does not correlate with BMI or smoking status. The
PLAC Test is the only bio marker that is FDA
approved for ischemic stroke risk assessment.
Other important facts:
•Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase
A2 (Lp-PLA2)
•Enzyme not a lipoprotein
•Circulates in the blood primarily
bound to LDL
•Produced and secreted by macrophages

•Proposed causal role in
atherosclerosis, not just a marker of

•Implicated in the formation
of vulnerable, rupture-prone plaque
•Generates pro-inflammatory mediators

The NMR
LipoProfile® test is
an advanced cardiovascular diagnostic test that uses
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to uniquely
provide rapid, simultaneous and direct measurement
of LDL particle number and size of LDL particles, as
well as direct measurement of HDL and VLDL subclasses. This
detailed lipoprotein particle information allows clinicians
to make more effective individualized treatment decisions
than previously possible based on standard lipid panel
testing. The atherosclerotic culprit is LDL particle
number, not LDL cholesterol. The NMR LipoProfile test
differentiates CHD risk in patients who may have similar
cholesterol values, especially when the LDL cholesterol
is at or near ATP III treatment goals.

with this test that measures the 2- and 16-a-hydroxyderivatives
of estrone and estradiol. If the 2/16 OH ratio is too
low, the use of foods or supplements containing DIM or
I3C can stimulate hepatic P450 enzymes to increase the
favorable 2-hydroxy derivative. Breast cancer risk can
be successfully reduced when detected early. A simple,
inexpensive screening test can be conducted in the privacy

Erythrocyte
element levels are good indicators of body pools of essential
elements as well as the toxic elements aluminum, arsenic,
cadmium, lead, and mercury. The Metametrix Nutrient and
Toxic Elements Profile is an especially accurate way of
determining whole body status of potassium and selenium.
The importance of calcium and phosphorus to bone formation
and the electrolyte role of sodium and potassium are commonly
understood. Magnesium is involved in over 300 chemical
reactions in the body, including all ATP transformations
and therefore all cellular energy production. Depletion
from food sources has resulted in a near epidemic of magnesium
insufficiency. Selenium is required by the enzyme glutathione
peroxidase, which maintains the oxidative balance in all
tissue. Low selenium, therefore, can directly influence
an individual's antioxidant protection. Chromium and manganese
are especially important in insulin insensitivity and Metabolic
Syndrome. Zinc deficiency has been implicated in a variety
of disorders, including sexual impotence, retarded growth,
hair loss, and immune system depression. Because of rapid
depletion of all elements, erythrocyte analysis should
be standard protocol before and throughout chelation therapy.
Nutrient element analysis is critical for identifying both
the need for and monitoring the adequacy of either oral
or IV supplementation. This is a serum test and a
complementary Comprehensive Metabolic Panel is included
for the blood draw. Click here for sample

| The prostate specific
antigen (PSA), is a protein made only in the prostate
gland. PSA is produced by normal, abnormal and cancerous
prostatic tissue. The PSA blood test is an accurate measure
of this amount. The theory is that cancer causes more
of the protein to be made and leaked into the blood than
normal prostate tissue, so PSA is now used for assisting
in the diagnosis and monitoring of prostatic carcinoma. *When

In March, FDA approved the Tandem R test, which measures
not only total PSA but another component called "free
PSA,"
which floats unbound in the blood. Comparing the two helps
doctors rule out cancer in men whose PSA is mildly elevated
from other causes. A 1995 study in the Journal of the American
Medical Association showed that the free PSA test can reduce
unnecessary prostate biopsies by 20 percent in patients
with a PSA between 4 and 10. For

Antigen 125 (CA125) |

Price $89 Retail
$145 You Save $56 |
| Cancer of the ovaries
is the sixth most common cancer in women. The life-time
risk of developing ovarian cancer is 1/70 or about 25,000
new cases each year. Of these, more than 14,000 women
die each year, thus making it a more common cause of death
than the more prevalent (but more easily detected) cancers
of the uterus and cervix. The main reason this type
of cancer goes undetected is the symptoms of ovarian cancer
are fairly non-specific. They include:
abdominal discomfort, pressure, bloating, or swelling.
It is difficult to detect ovarian
cancer early – only about 25% of the cancers are
found in the easily treatable stage, before they have spread
beyond the ovary. Because the symptoms of ovarian cancer
are subtle and non-specific and since there are many non-cancerous
conditions that can also cause similar symptoms, it is
important to have regular checkups and to consult with
your physician if you are experiencing any of the noted
symptoms.
The main risk factor for ovarian cancer
is a positive family history. Ovarian cancer survival
is directly related to its detection stage. Studies have
shown that the CA125 may forewarn of ovarian cancer, as
80% of the women who have ovarian cancer have elevated
levels of the serum tumor marker CA125. This also means
that less than 20% of these women do not have the marker
at all. The rate of "false positives" with CA125
is also high, which means that this test alone is inadequate
for screening purposes. It is not licensed as a complete
cancer screening, and should be supplemented with your
physician's examination. However repeat testing of CA125
is helpful to observe a trend.

Many patients ask their
physicians if they can eat curd or whey protein, if they
test positive to milk. Sometimes they ask if they can have
egg white or egg yolk if they test positive for the whole
egg. The answers can be easily determined if the test for
sub-fractions is performed. One of the first steps in preparing
cheese is to separate the curds from the whey. This is
often done by acid-precipitation of the milk (souring),
followed by centrifugation. Curds are insoluble (precipitate);
whey is liquid (supernate). Cheese is made from curds. The
major component of curds is Casein. Whey proteins consist
of Alpha-lactalbumin (ALA), Beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), Bovine
serum albumin (BSA) and lactoferrin (LF). These five proteins,
subfractions of milk, are tested individually. If the patient
is positive to Casein, they should not eat cheese. If the
patient is positive to any of the 4 proteins of whey, they
should not include whey proteins in their diet. The two
main components of egg are egg-white and egg-yolk. These
two sub-fractions of egg are tested separately. Most
people are positive to both. When positive to one sub-fraction
and negative to the other, the
negative component may be eaten.

Celiac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, the two recognized
forms of gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE) are characterized
by chronic inflammation on the intestinal mucosa and flattening
of the epithelium or positive “villous
atrophy.” Intolerance to gluten, the protein of wheat, rye and barley causes
GSE. Patients with celiac disease may suffer other diverse side effects or they
may be asymptomatic. Dermatitis herpetiformis is a skin disease associated with
GSE. All GSE patients have increased risk of lymphoma. A gluten-free
diet controls GSE and associated risks.
The development of serum tests for three different antibodies of the IgA isotype
made it possible to generate more rapid, revised European Society for Pediatric
Gastroenterology and Nutrition (ESPGAN) criteria for celiac disease as reported
in 1990. These tests include IgA endomysial antibodies (EMA), IgA antigliadin
antibodies (AGA) and R1 antireticulin antibodies (ARA) The revised ESPGAN criteria
