Iodine, Serum
Fasting Required: No

Specimen: Blood

Results: 3-5 business days

Description: This blood test is used to monitor thyroid problems such as iodine-induced hypothyroidism, autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland, and hyperthyroidism associated with excessive iodine intake.

It is not designed to determine optimal iodine status in an individual choosing to supplement with iodine. Careful consideration of other thyroid function tests as well as clinical symptoms is essential. Currently, there is no generally agreed upon iodine test that can evaluate optimal iodine dosage.

Iodine is an essential element that is required for thyroid hormone production. The measurement of iodine serves as an index of adequate dietary intake.

Methodology: Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
