Homocysteine-February Test of the Month
Fasting Required: No

Specimen: Blood

Results: 5-7 Business Days

Description: Homocysteine is an amino acid that plays a role in destroying the lining of your artery walls, promoting the formation of blood clots, and also accelerates the buildup of scar tissue. High levels may increase the chance of heart disease and stroke, especially if you have other risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, or family history.

When used in conjunction with methylmalonic acid (MMA), these tests are useful to diagnose and monitor vitamin B12 (cobalamin) and folic acid deficiency and are often useful in evaluating macrocytosis (an elevated MCV, an erythrocytic index).

Methodology: Enzymatic

Alternate Name(s): Plasma Total Homocysteine and Homocysteine Cardiac Risk
